Marble votive relief with Cybele enthroned

Roman marble votive relief with Cybele enthroned. Post-2nd century AD. The Goddess is represented in a small temple, wearing a sleeveless, girdled chiton, a himation and a high polos. She holds a phiale in the right hand and a drum in the left. Visible on her knees are traces of a lion. The lion and the drum, which was played during rites in Cybeles honour, were the attributes of the Great Mother Goddess of Asia Minor. Small temples of this kind, which perhaps denote the shallow caves in which statues of her were placed, are identified in sanctuaries of Cybele and other deities after the Late Classical period, in private houses and in cemeteries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable marble votive relief depicting Cybele, the Great Mother Goddess of Asia Minor. Dating back to the post-2nd century AD, this Roman artwork portrays Cybele enthroned within a small temple. Adorned in a sleeveless and girdled chiton, along with a high polos and himation, she exudes an aura of divine power and grace. In her hands, Cybele holds a phiale and a drum - symbols that were integral to the rites performed in her honor. Traces of a lion can be seen on her knees, further emphasizing her association with this majestic creature. These attributes highlight the significance of Cybele as one of the most revered deities during ancient times. The composition evokes curiosity about these small temples that possibly represented shallow caves where statues of Cybele were placed. Such structures are often found in sanctuaries dedicated to both Cybele and other deities after the Late Classical period. Interestingly enough, they have also been discovered in private houses and cemeteries. This studio shot captures every intricate detail of this ancient masterpiece – from its vertical sculpture to its female likeness. It serves as an exquisite testament to the artistry and craftsmanship prevalent during this era
