Arrival of the Great Western at New York (1838), c1895. Steam ship designed

Arrival of the Great Western at New York (1838), c1895. Steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) and built by William Patterson (1795-1869) of Bristol, which began a regular run between Bristol and New York in 1838. This was a steam-powered wooden vessel, capable of 12 knots under steam and, because of her engine and her ability to carry fuel for 26 days, it was possible to cut down her rigging. From The Sea by F. Whymper. (London, c1895). Artist Overend, William Heysman (British artist, 1851-1898)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the "Arrival of the Great Western at New York" in 1838. Designed by the brilliant Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built by William Patterson, this steam ship marked a significant milestone in transatlantic travel. The vessel, constructed with wood and powered by steam, boasted an impressive speed of 12 knots under steam power alone. What set this ship apart was its remarkable ability to carry enough fuel for a staggering 26 days, allowing it to cut down on rigging and sail more efficiently. This innovation revolutionized long-distance voyages between Bristol and New York, establishing a regular run that would forever change maritime history. The artist behind this stunning depiction is William Heysman Overend, whose attention to detail brings every element of this historical event to life. From the grandeur of the Great Western itself to the bustling port city backdrop of New York, Overend's artistic talent shines through. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the marvels of engineering achieved during that era. It serves as a testament not only to Brunel's visionary designs but also to all those who played a part in making these incredible feats possible. This print from Universal Images Group (UIG) allows us to appreciate both the artistry involved and the significance of such technological advancements that continue shaping our world even today.
