Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759) in Finland, 1736. In 1736 Maupertuis, French astronomer and mathematician, led an expedition to Lapland to measure the length of a degree along the meridian. The expedition included the French mathematicians Alexis Claude Clairault (1713-1765) and Charles Etienne Louis Camus (1699-1768). They set up their headquarters at Torino in Northern Finland. In summer they were plagued by insects and in winter suffered from the cold. From Vies des Savants Illustres du XVIIIe Siecle, Louis Figuier, (Paris 1874)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis, a renowned French astronomer and mathematician, during his expedition to Lapland in 1736. Leading a team of fellow scientists including Alexis Claude Clairault and Charles Etienne Louis Camus, Maupertuis embarked on this arduous journey with the goal of measuring the length of a degree along the meridian. The group established their headquarters in Torino, located in Northern Finland. However, their quest was not without challenges. During the summer months, they were incessantly plagued by swarms of insects that made their work difficult. And when winter arrived, they had to endure harsh Arctic conditions that tested their resilience. Despite these hardships, Maupertuis and his team persevered in their scientific pursuits. Their groundbreaking measurements would contribute significantly to our understanding of Earth's shape and dimensions. This remarkable image offers us a glimpse into the world of these intrepid explorers as they braved both natural obstacles and extreme weather conditions for the sake of advancing human knowledge. It serves as a testament to the dedication and determination exhibited by early scientists who ventured into uncharted territories in pursuit of discovery. From Vies des Savants Illustres du XVIIIe Siecle (Paris 1874), this photograph allows us to appreciate the courage and intellectual curiosity that drove individuals like Maupertuis to explore new frontiers for the betterment of humanity's collective understanding.
