EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary John Benbow, an esteemed English naval commander hailing from the picturesque town of Shrewsbury in Shropshire. Born in 1653, Benbow's remarkable career culminated with his appointment as Vice-Admiral in 1701. The image captures a pivotal moment in history when Benbow found himself amidst the vast expanse of the West Indies, specifically off Santa Marta. It was here that he encountered a formidable French force led by Du Casse on that fateful day of 19 August 1702. Despite facing overwhelming odds, Benbow fearlessly engaged his adversaries. Tragically, during this intense battle, chain-shot shattered his leg and left him severely wounded. To compound matters further, he was deserted by his own captains who faltered under pressure. Ultimately succumbing to his injuries, Brave Benbow breathed his last breath in Jamaica later that October. The engraving faithfully depicts John Benbow based on an original portrait painted by the renowned artist Godfrey Kneller. Through this visual tribute to a true hero and sailor extraordinaire, we are reminded of the indomitable spirit and unwavering courage displayed by Admiral John Benbow throughout his illustrious career
