EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling mining industry in Seaham Colliery, County Durham, England. The image showcases the impressive head gear towering above the deep shaft, symbolizing the heart of this active coal seam. Two central vignettes highlight two models of miners' lamps - on the left is the popular Davy lamp, while on the right is its counterpart, the Clanny lamp. Intriguingly, below these vignettes, we witness a young boy diligently operating a ventilating furnace. This crucial device creates a much-needed draught within the mine workings to prevent any dangerous build-up of fire-damp or methane gas. Safety was paramount in these treacherous conditions. On the far right side of this engraving, we catch a glimpse of a pit pony dutifully pulling wagons through a trap door. These intelligent and hardworking animals played an integral role in transporting coal from underground mines. The detailed illustration originates from The Graphic newspaper published on January 28th, 1871. It offers us an invaluable insight into Britain's rich mining history and serves as a reminder of both human ingenuity and resilience amidst challenging circumstances.
