This evocative photograph captures the tense moment during World War I as a German U-Boat lieutenant peers intently through the periscope of his submarine, scanning the surface for enemy ships. The year was 1915, and the use of submarines in warfare was still a relatively new and dangerous technology. The U-Boat, or Unterseeboot, was a type of German submarine that was particularly effective in disrupting Allied supply lines and sinking merchant ships. The image shows the submarine's conning tower, a small, cylindrical structure that rose above the waterline, housing the periscope and the command center. The lieutenant's intense focus is evident as he carefully surveys the surrounding waters, his eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of enemy vessels.
