EDITORS COMMENTS
Two British DH9A biplanes of 39 Squadron RAF soaring through the skies during the First World War. Known as the "Ninak," this model of Airco (Associated Aircraft Manufacturers, a subsidiary of De Havilland) DH9A biplanes was a two-seater light bomber, equipped with a powerful 400hp Liberty engine. The DH9A was a significant improvement over its predecessor, the DH9, featuring a more robust structure and increased payload capacity. In this photograph, taken in 1917, we see two of these impressive aircraft in flight. The open cockpits reveal the pilots in their flying gear, focused intently on their mission. The DH9A biplanes were primarily used for daytime bombing raids, targeting enemy infrastructure and troop concentrations. Their versatility also made them valuable for reconnaissance and ground-attack roles. The 39 Squadron, part of the Royal Flying Corps (later the RAF), was one of the most decorated units in the First World War. The DH9A biplanes played a crucial role in their successes, contributing to the Allied victory in the conflict. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and skill of the pilots who flew these aircraft, risking their lives to protect their country and bring an end to the war.
