EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1914 from the archives of Mary Evans Prints Online, presents a heartwarming and intriguing glimpse into the history of the world during a time of great turmoil – the early years of the First World War. The image, titled "Twins / French Leave C1914," depicts a cheerful mother holding two adorable sets of twins, each dressed in matching outfits, with rosy cheeks and bright eyes. The title of the photograph, "French Leave," is an intriguing term that originated from the military during the 18th and 19th centuries. It referred to soldiers who deserted their posts by sneaking away under the cover of darkness, often disguised as civilians, to return to their homes in France. However, the use of this term in the context of this photograph is not related to military desertion but rather to the double results of the twins' birth. The First World War, which began in 1914, brought immense hardships and challenges to families across Europe and beyond. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, the birth of twins must have been a source of joy and hope. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of families during times of war and the enduring power of love and happiness. The smiling mother in the photograph holds her precious bundles of joy close, her face radiating with pride and contentment. The twins, seemingly unaware of the world's troubles, gaze up at their mother with innocent curiosity. This image offers a brief yet powerful respite from the harsh realities of the war and invites us to reflect on the enduring human spirit and the power of family.
