1480 Bandaging Crusades Lift Rhodes Siege Turks Wound

EDITORS COMMENTS
August 1480: The Turks Lift the Siege of Rhodes, an Eventful Moment in Crusade History This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the long and complex history of the Crusades: the lifting of the siege of Rhodes by the Turks in August 1480. The fortified city of Rhodes, located in the eastern Aegean Sea, had been under siege for over a year as the Ottoman Turks, led by Sultan Bayezid II, sought to conquer the last major stronghold of the Knights Hospitaller in the eastern Mediterranean. In this print from Mary Evans Picture Library, we see a group of wounded Knights Hospitaller being tended to by their comrades, as the relief forces of the Venetians and other European powers arrive to lift the siege. The Knights, clad in their distinctive white mantles and red crosses, are shown with swords at their sides, their faces etched with determination and exhaustion. The medical attendant in the foreground applies a bandage to a wounded knight, his expression one of quiet focus and compassion. The relief forces, led by the Venetian admiral, Giacomo Querini, had arrived just in time to turn the tide of the battle. The Turks, who had been making significant gains, were forced to retreat, leaving the Knights Hospitaller to celebrate their victory and tend to their wounded. This event was a significant turning point in the history of the Crusades, as it marked the last successful defense of a Crusader stronghold against the Ottoman Turks. The Knights Hospitaller would continue to hold Rhodes until 1522, when it was finally conquered by the Ottomans under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. This powerful print, with its depiction of the courage and determination of the Knights Hospitaller, offers a glimpse into the rich and complex history of the Crusades and the ongoing struggle between European and Ottoman powers in the Mediterranean world.
