Turkish Wrestler (2 of 4)

A Turkish wrestler, Ryza Bey, lifts enormous dumbells whilst another strongman colleague sits on his shoulders. A series of cards (2 of 4) depicting a Turkish wrestler, juggler, weightlifter, strongman and entertainer. Yagli gures (Turkish wrestling) is the Turkish national sport. It is commonly known as oil wrestling (sometimes as grease wrestling) because the wrestlers douse themselves with olive oil. It is related to Uzbek Kurash, Tuvan Khuresh and to Tatar Koras. The wrestlers, known as pehlivan (from Persian meaning " hero" or " champion" ) wear a type of hand-stitched lederhosen called kisbet (sometimes kispet), which were traditionally made of water buffalo hide, but now also of calf leather

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the raw strength and determination of Turkish wrestler Ryza Bey as he lifts enormous dumbells, with the support of a fellow strongman colleague seated on his shoulders. The image is part of a series of vintage prints depicting various Turkish performers, including a juggler, weightlifter, strongman, and entertainer. The Turkish national sport of Yagli güreş, or oil wrestling, has a rich history dating back to the Ottoman Empire. Known as pehlivan, or champions, the wrestlers wear traditional kisbet outfits, hand-stitched lederhosen made from water buffalo hide or calf leather. The sport, which involves dousing oneself in olive oil, is related to Uzbek Kurash, Tuvan Khuresh, and Tatar Koras. This photograph, taken in 1905, offers a glimpse into the historical strength and camp atmosphere of Turkish wrestling. The image exudes a sense of raw power and camaraderie, making it a fascinating addition to any collection focusing on Turkish culture, history, and human strength.
