EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a moment during the Turkish War of Independence in 1920, as British forces triumphantly display their captives - Turkish nationalist prisoners taken at Izmit, a city now known as Kocaeli. The three prominent figures in the foreground are identified as the ringleaders of the resistance movement in this region, which had been a hotbed of anti-colonial sentiment since the end of World War I. The city of Izmit, then known as Nicomedia or Astacus, had been a strategic stronghold for the Turkish nationalists, who had successfully repelled several British attempts to seize control. However, in June 1920, the British forces, bolstered by reinforcements from the Royal Navy, managed to break through the Turkish defenses and capture the city. The three ringleaders, standing defiantly in the midst of their captors, were subsequently sentenced to death for their role in the resistance. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of the Turkish War of Independence, a conflict that saw Turkish nationalists fight against foreign occupation and the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire. The war ultimately ended with the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, which recognized the new Turkish Republic and its borders. The photograph also underscores the complex and often violent history of the modern Turkish state, which has undergone numerous transformations in the last century.
