1834 Dowager Empress Feng Hsien Cixi

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic and powerful figure of Tsu Hsi (1834-1908), also known as Cixi or Tz'u-hsi, the Dowager Empress of China from 1861 until her death in 1908. Born into humble beginnings as a concubine in the imperial harem, Tsu Hsi rose to become one of the most influential women in Chinese history. Born in 1834 in Anhui Province, Tsu Hsi was brought to the Forbidden City in Beijing as a young girl to become a concubine to the Xianfeng Emperor. She gained the favor of the emperor and gave birth to his only son, the future Tongzhi Emperor. After the emperor's death in 1861, Tsu Hsi assumed the role of regent for her young son, eventually seizing the throne for herself in 1862. During her reign, Tsu Hsi implemented a series of reforms aimed at modernizing China and strengthening its position in the face of foreign encroachment. She supported the development of the navy, the expansion of the imperial examinations system, and the establishment of modern schools and universities. However, her rule was also marked by increasing authoritarianism and the suppression of political dissent. This striking image of Tsu Hsi, dressed in the robes of a high-ranking official, conveys both her regal authority and her enigmatic personality. Her piercing gaze and stern expression suggest a woman who was not to be trifled with, while her delicate features and elegant posture hint at the refined sensibilities of the imperial court. Despite her controversial legacy, Tsu Hsi remains an intriguing and complex figure in Chinese history. Her reign marked the end of the old imperial order and the beginning of the modern era in China. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied convention and wielded immense power in a male-dominated society.
