Tsar Alexander II of Russia, also known as "The Liberator," is depicted in this striking photograph taken in the late 19th century. The Tsar, who ruled from 1855 until his assassination in 1881, is shown here in his military uniform, complete with epaulettes and a sash adorned with the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. The Tsar's distinctive moustache and whiskers add to his regal and imposing appearance. Alexander II came to power following the death of his father, Tsar Nicholas I, in 1855. He is best known for his reforms, which included the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, the establishment of a constitutional government in 1861, and the implementation of judicial reforms. These reforms helped to modernize Russia and pave the way for its transformation into a more democratic society. Despite his progressive policies, however, Alexander II faced opposition from conservative elements within Russian society, including the military and the Orthodox Church. In 1881, he was assassinated by members of the People's Will terrorist organization during an attempt to visit the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
