EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Tsar Alexander II of Russia (1818-1881) in his naval uniform, a testament to his deep connection with the Russian navy. Born on December 29, 1818, Alexander II ascended to the throne in 1855 following the death of his father, Tsar Nicholas I. Throughout his reign, he implemented numerous reforms aimed at modernizing Russia and improving the lives of its people. One of Alexander II's most significant achievements was the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, which ended their legal bondage and granted them personal freedom. However, his reforms did not extend to the navy, which remained a bastion of tradition and autocracy. Alexander II's interest in the navy was evident from an early age, and he served as a midshipman in the Black Sea Fleet during the Crimean War (1853-1856). He continued to take an active interest in naval affairs throughout his reign, and in 1862, he established the Main Naval Technical Committee to oversee the modernization of the Russian fleet. In this photograph, taken likely in the late 1870s, Alexander II is shown in his full admiral's uniform, complete with the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called, the highest order of chivalry in the Russian Empire. The Tsar's piercing gaze and stern expression convey a sense of determination and resolve, reflecting his unwavering commitment to the Russian navy and the country he led. Tragically, Alexander II's reign came to an end on March 13, 1881, when he was assassinated by members of the People's Will terrorist organization during an inspection of a bridge in St. Petersburg. His death marked the end of an era in Russian history, and his legacy as a reformer and modernizer remains a subject of fascination and debate among historians and scholars to this day.
