EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the pivotal moment when the Roman Triumvirate, an influential political alliance between Octavian (later known as Augustus, the first Roman Emperor), Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Marcus Antonius (Marcus Aurelius Antony), came to an end. The Triumvirate, formed in 60 BC to restore order and stability in Rome after the civil strife caused by the assassination of Julius Caesar, had proven successful in defeating their political enemies and expanding the Roman Empire. However, tensions between Octavian and Antonius began to rise over the distribution of power and the favor of Cleopatra VII, the Queen of Egypt, who had become Antonius' lover. In this Senate scene, depicted in the print from Mary Evans Picture Library, Octavian and Antonius engage in a heated quarrel, with the other members of the Senate looking on in shock and disbelief. Octavian, standing at the center, gestures angrily towards Antonius, who sits on the right, his face contorted with emotion. The senators, dressed in togas and seated around the room, appear stunned and divided, some siding with Octavian, others with Antonius. The Triumvirate's breakup marked the beginning of a new era in Roman history. The ensuing civil war between Octavian and Antonius, known as the Perusine War, ended with Octavian's victory in 32 BC. Octavian's triumph solidified his position as the undisputed leader of Rome, paving the way for the Roman Empire's golden age under his rule. This historical print, with its intricate details and vivid portrayal of the emotions and tension in the room, offers a captivating glimpse into the complex political dynamics of ancient Rome.
