This evocative photograph captures the spirit of adventure and determination that drove thousands of travellers to the Transvaal goldfields in South Africa at the end of the 19th century. Taken in 1899, the image shows a group of travellers making their way through the rugged terrain, their wagons laden with supplies and their faces set with resolve. The Transvaal goldfields, located in present-day South Africa, had been discovered in the late 1880s, and the news of the discovery spread quickly, leading to a rush of prospectors and settlers seeking their fortunes. The journey to the goldfields was long and arduous, with travellers facing numerous challenges, including harsh weather conditions, scarce water supplies, and the ever-present threat of attack from local tribes or other travellers. Despite these challenges, the prospect of wealth and a new life drew people from all walks of life to make the journey. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of these travellers, who were often referred to as "Uitlanders," or foreigners, by the native population. The men in the image are dressed in work clothes and hats, while the women and children travel in the wagons. The oxen pulling the wagons are harnessed and ready to continue the journey.
