This evocative photograph captures the spirit of adventure and determination that drove thousands of travellers to the Transvaal goldfields in South Africa at the end of the 19th century. Taken in 1899, the image shows a group of travellers making their way through the rugged terrain, their wagons laden with supplies and their faces set with resolve.
