EDITORS COMMENTS
Transporting Cleopatra's Needle: A Historical Journey Down the Thames in 1878 This photograph captures a significant moment in the transportation of Cleopatra's Needle from Egypt to England in 1878. The obelisk, which dates back to ancient Egypt, is being carefully transported down the River Thames on a cylindrical ship. The bridge in the background is Westminster Bridge, providing a historic backdrop to this engineering feat. The initial leg of the journey from the Bay of Biscay to England was fraught with stormy conditions, forcing the abandonment of the ship carrying the obelisk in February 1878. The cylindrical ship, designed specifically for the transportation of the obelisk, was unable to withstand the harsh weather and had to be rescued the following year. Despite the setback, the journey was eventually completed on February 21, 1879, when the obelisk was successfully transported to its final destination, Victoria Embankment Gardens in London. The obelisk, which stands at over 22 meters tall, was a gift from the Egyptian Khedive Ismail to Queen Victoria. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the engineers and sailors involved in the transportation of Cleopatra's Needle, and serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural exchange that has taken place between Egypt and England over the centuries. The photograph is from the Mary Evans Picture Library, a leading provider of high-quality historical images for educational, commercial, and personal use. This image, with its unique historical significance, is a valuable addition to any collection of historical photographs.
