EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the young and tragic figure of Louis XVII of France, also known as Louis VI of Navarre. Born on March 27,1785, he was initially recognized as Louis-Charles, Duke of Normandy until 1789 when he became Dauphin of Viennois. In 1791, his title changed once again to Prince Royal of France until the tumultuous years that followed. As the son of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, his fate was intertwined with the French Revolution. From his father's death in 1793 until his own demise in 1795 at a tender age, royalists considered him the rightful King of France and Navarre. However, this claim remained symbolic as he spent these final years imprisoned by Republicans who opposed monarchy. The oval-framed portrait exudes an air of royalty and nobility befitting a prince. The young Louis XVII gazes solemnly into the distance while adorned with a sash denoting his status within society. His innocence is palpable yet overshadowed by the weighty circumstances surrounding him. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder not only of one individual's tragic destiny but also reflects upon an era marked by political upheaval and social unrest. It encapsulates both personal identity and historical significance within its carefully composed frame – a testament to Royalty's enduring allure even amidst turbulent times.
