EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of housing construction and planning. It showcases the arrival of the first trainloads of walls, floors, stairs, and landings components for the groundbreaking London County Council's industrialized housing scheme at Morris Walk, Woolwich. The ambitious project aims to create 562 flats that will revolutionize living conditions in Britain. Taken on March 3rd, 1964, this image highlights a section of one flat being lifted from the track that carries these prefabricated components from Charlton's railway sidings to the site. The components were transported by rail all the way from Taylor Woodrow Anglian's factory in Lenwade near Norwich. These LCC Morris Walk flats mark a turning point as they are not only the first large-scale industrialized blocks of council flats in Britain but also represent Taylor Woodrow Anglian's debut into this innovative construction method. This photograph encapsulates both progress and anticipation for improved accommodation options during an era defined by rapid social change. The significance of this image lies not only in its historical context but also its portrayal of pioneering architectural techniques. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination to provide better housing solutions for communities across Britain during the swinging sixties.
