EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Bloody Easter Dublin Martyrs, who fearlessly led the 1916 Rebellion. These courageous individuals were not your typical Bolshevik revolutionaries; they encompassed a diverse group of poets, scholars, and even nobility. Among them was Countess Markevicz, an extraordinary woman whose death sentence was commuted to hard labor for life. Another remarkable figure in this image is Eamon De Valera, seen in the bottom row. Despite facing imminent danger, he managed to escape and later became an esteemed elder statesman for his country. Printed shortly after the failed uprising, this laudatory broadsheet serves as a testament to their unwavering dedication to their cause. The date on which it was published - March 19th, 1916 - holds historical significance as it marks a pivotal moment in Irish history.
