The Oldest Man in the World - A Fascinating Portrait of Time and Resilience
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are introduced to a remarkable individual known as "The Oldest Man in the World". Ka be nahigwey wence, or better recognized as plain John Smith. Allegedly celebrating his one hundredth and thirty-fourth birthday party on October 29,1921, this portrait offers a glimpse into an extraordinary life. John Smith, also referred to as Gaa-binagwiiys (which translates to "the flesh peels off"), was a Chippewa Indian residing in the Cass Lake area of Minnesota. His various names - Kahbe nagwi wens, Ka-be-na-gwe-wes, Ka-be-nah-gwey-wence, Kay-bah-nung-we-way or Ga-Be-Nah-Gewn-Wonce - all convey the essence of his aged appearance: "Sloughing Flesh" "Wrinkle Meat" or simply "Old Wrinkled Meat". Dressed impeccably in Western attire with a distinguished top hat adorning his head, John Smith's face tells tales of wisdom and endurance. The lines etched deeply upon his weathered skin bear witness to countless years lived fully. This monochrome photograph captures not only an individual but also serves as a testament to human resilience against the passage of time. It is believed that John Smith passed away on February 6th, 1922
