EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment when Tom Thumb, the famed American microcephalic entertainer, exchanged vows with his bride, Lavinica Warren, on their wedding day in 1863. Tom Thumb, born as Charles Stratton, was a sensation in the 19th century for his extraordinary small size, measuring only 41 inches tall. He began his career as a performer at the age of four and traveled extensively with P.T. Barnum's American Museum. Lavinia Warren, also known as Lavinia Warren Stratton, was born with dwarfism, and the couple met while performing together in Barnum's show. They fell in love and married in a highly publicized ceremony at the St. James Church in Brooklyn, New York. The wedding was attended by over 1,000 guests, including many notable figures of the time. Despite the joyous occasion, the couple's union was shrouded in controversy and intrigue. Some believed that Tom Thumb was not human but rather a supernatural being, and rumors swirled that he was a hoax. Others questioned the legitimacy of their relationship, given the significant age difference between the couple and the fact that Lavinia was reportedly paid to be Tom Thumb's wife. Regardless of the speculation, the photograph stands as a testament to the love and connection between Tom Thumb and Lavinia. They remained married for over 20 years until Tom Thumb's death in 1883. Their story continues to fascinate historians, oddities enthusiasts, and anyone with an interest in the human condition and the extraordinary.
