EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts the renowned Roman historian and writer, Titus Livius, also known as Livy. Born on January 59 BC in Patavium, in the Roman province of Venetia and Histria, Livy is celebrated for his extensive historical works, which covered the history of Rome from its mythological founding to the reign of Augustus. The image, created by the French cartographer and geographer, Abraham Ortelius' associate, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, under the supervision of the French explorer and ethnographer André Thevet, was published in 1584. Thevet's extensive annotations on the print suggest that it was intended to accompany his publication, "Les Singularites de la France Antarctique." Livy is depicted in a three-quarter profile, with his curly hair cascading down to his shoulders. He is shown in the act of writing, a quill pen in hand, and a pile of parchment and books at his side. The historian's thoughtful expression and intense focus on his work convey the depth of his dedication and commitment to recording the history of Rome. The intricately detailed engraving showcases the skill and artistry of the engraver, with the folds of Livy's toga and the textured surface of the parchment adding to the authenticity and realism of the image. The portrait offers a glimpse into the world of ancient Rome and the tireless efforts of its greatest historians, inspiring awe and admiration for the depth and richness of human knowledge and the enduring power of the written word.
