EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from the late 19th century captures the fascinating evolution of the bicycle over three distinct periods in its development. On the left, we see the Dandy of Pre-Historic Times, an early 19th century bicycle that predates the introduction of pedals. This rudimentary bicycle was propelled by pushing off with the feet, making it a far cry from the modern bicycles we know today. Moving to the right, we encounter The Bone Shaker of the Middle Ages, a bicycle from the mid-19th century. This significant advancement in bicycle technology introduced pedals, allowing riders to propel themselves forward with greater efficiency. However, the design was far from comfortable, earning its name due to the jarring ride it provided. In the middle, we find The Ariel of Modern Times, a Penny Farthing bicycle from the 1870s. This iconic design, with its large front wheel and small rear wheel, represented a major leap forward in bicycle technology. The Penny Farthing allowed riders to achieve higher speeds and greater distances than ever before, making it a symbol of the modern age. This image provides a glimpse into the rich history of the bicycle, showcasing the incredible progress made in just a few short decades. From the early, foot-propelled Dandy to the bone-jarring Bone Shaker, and finally to the sleek and efficient Ariel, this engraving is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation that has shaped the world of cycling.
