EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases three intricately designed medallions from the First World War era. At the top, a large round medallion proudly displays the distinguished face of Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, the influential German naval leader whose strategic plans and expansive naval building program played a significant role in the outbreak of the war. Below the admiral's image, a smaller round medallion bears the regal visage of Kaiser Franz Josef I of Austria. The Austrian monarch's involvement in the complex web of alliances that led to the Great War is well documented. The focal point of intrigue, however, lies at the bottom of the medallion where an oval design showcases the satirically named Brandstifte Kollegium, or Incendiary Association, of the four Allied political leaders. Depicted are the heads of the French Foreign Minister, Theo Delcasse; the British First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston S. Churchill (then known as First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Edward Grey); the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Sazonov (mislabeled as Iswolsky in the medallion); and the Italian Prime Minister, Antonio Salandra. The smaller head on the left is that of King George V of Great Britain. This striking medallion, dating from 1914-1915, offers a unique glimpse into the political landscape of the time, encapsulating the faces of the key figures who shaped the course of the First World War. The intricate design and historical significance make this an invaluable piece of art and a fascinating window into the past.
