The year was 1556, and Cranmer, dressed in the traditional white surplice and black robe of his office, held a ring in one hand and a stack of books in the other. Born in 1489, Cranmer rose to prominence during the reign of King Henry VIII, serving as the king's personal chaplain and later becoming Archbishop of Canterbury in 1533. Cranmer played a pivotal role in the English Reformation, advocating for the adoption of Protestant theology and the break from the Roman Catholic Church. However, his reformist views put him at odds with Queen Mary I, who came to power in 1553 and sought to restore Catholicism in England.
