Born into the noble Irish family of the Earls of Kildare and Ossory, Thomas played a significant role in European politics and warfare. Thomas' military career began in earnest when he joined the English army in the Netherlands during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667). In the following years, he continued to serve in various military campaigns across Europe, including the Franco-Dutch War (1672-1678), where he gained recognition for his strategic prowess and bravery.
