Born into the noble Irish family of the Earls of Kildare and Ossory, Thomas played a significant role in European politics and warfare. Thomas' military career began in earnest when he joined the English army in the Netherlands during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667). He proved himself to be a capable and effective commander, leading his troops with great success. In the following years, he continued to serve in various military campaigns across Europe, including the Franco-Dutch War (1672-1678), where he gained recognition for his strategic prowess and bravery. In addition to his military accomplishments, Thomas was also a skilled naval commander. He served as a Lord of the Admiralty and was instrumental in the planning and execution of several naval expeditions. His naval expertise was particularly valuable during the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674), where he played a crucial role in the Battle of Schooneveld. Thomas Earl of Ossory was not only a military and naval commander but also a statesman. He served as a Member of Parliament in the English and Irish parliaments and was a Privy Counsellor to King Charles II. His diplomatic skills and political acumen were invaluable in navigating the complex political landscape of the time.
