EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the dignified presence of Joseph Dudley (1647-1720), an English colonial administrator who played a pivotal role in the administration of the Dominion of New England. Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Dudley rose to prominence under the rule of King James II, serving as the Deputy Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1683 to 1686. In 1686, Dudley was appointed as the Governor of the Dominion of New England, which encompassed Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. During his tenure, he implemented a number of unpopular policies, including the imposition of the Church of England as the official religion and the attempt to impose a new land tax on the colonists. These actions, along with Dudley's perceived authoritarianism, fueled growing discontent among the colonists. The situation came to a head in 1689, when a rebellion broke out in Boston, leading to the overthrow of the Dominion government. Dudley was forced to flee to England, where he remained in exile for the remainder of his life. Despite the controversies of his governorship, this portrait presents Dudley as a confident and distinguished figure. His elaborate wig and curls are meticulously styled, and his piercing gaze suggests a strong will and determination. The portrait serves as a reminder of the complex and often contentious relationship between the English crown and its American colonies during this period of history.
