EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Therese Martin of Lisieux: A Saintly Childhood" This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the youthful image of Therese Martin, who would later become Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, also known as "The Little Flower of Lisieux." Taken around 1897, when she was just 14 years old, this image offers a glimpse into the early life of this remarkable French woman, who would leave an indelible mark on the history of the Catholic Church. Born in Alençon, France, in 1873, Therese was the youngest of nine children in a deeply religious family. From an early age, she was drawn to the spiritual life and felt a strong calling to enter a convent. At the age of 15, she joined the Carmelite Sisters of Lisieux, taking the name Sister Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. During her brief but intense religious life, Therese wrote extensively about her experiences, including her "Story of a Soul," which would become a spiritual classic. Her writings reveal her deep love for God and her unwavering faith, even in the face of suffering. Therese's life was marked by numerous spiritual experiences, including visions, ecstasies, and mystical union with God. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 24, but her legacy continued to grow. She was canonized in 1897, just two years after her death, and is now revered as a Doctor of the Church and a patron saint of missionaries, aviators, and the sick. This photograph of Therese Martin, taken during her childhood, offers a poignant reminder of the extraordinary life that lay ahead for this humble and devoted young woman. It is a testament to the power of faith and the enduring impact of a life lived in the service of God.
