EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking photograph captures the historic moment of the restoration of Cetewayo, also known as Cetshwayo KaMpande, as the rightful King of the Zulus in 1887, three years after the end of the Zulu Wars. The Zulu Wars, a series of conflicts between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, began in 1879 when the British invaded Zululand in an attempt to expand their colonial holdings. The wars resulted in significant losses for both sides, with the British ultimately emerging victorious. Following the wars, Cetewayo was exiled to Cape Town, South Africa, but after lengthy negotiations between Queen Victoria and the Colonial Office, he was granted the opportunity to return to his homeland and regain his throne. In this image, Cetewayo is seen standing proudly before a large crowd of Zulu people, many of whom had remained loyal to him throughout the conflicts. The British officials who oversaw the restoration, including Sir Henry Brougham Loch, the Governor of Natal, and Sir Bartle Frere, the former High Commissioner of South Africa, are also present. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. It also underscores the importance of diplomacy and negotiation in resolving conflicts and restoring peace, even in the midst of war and colonial expansion."
