EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the awe-inspiring sight of The Tol-Maen, or Main Rock, a natural wonder that once stood proudly in the picturesque parish of Constantine, Cornwall. Dating back to the prehistoric era, this massive boulder, also known as the Hole of Stone, measured approximately 12 feet in height and 15 feet in circumference. It was a significant landmark for the local community, with many legends and stories surrounding its origins. The Tol-Maen was believed to have been brought to the site by the giants during their legendary battles with the gods. Another tale suggested that it was a remnant of the ancient fortifications built by the Romans to protect the region from invaders. Regardless of its origins, the rock held great importance for the people of Constantine, who revered it as a sacred site and a symbol of their rich history. Unfortunately, the Tol-Maen's days were numbered. By the late 19th century, the boulder had become a hazard, as it posed a threat to travelers on the nearby road. In April 1869, the decision was made to demolish the rock to ensure the safety of the public. The engraving you see here is a testament to the Tol-Maen's former grandeur and the history it represented. Today, the site where the Tol-Maen once stood is a quiet reminder of Cornwall's rich past. Visitors can still marvel at the natural beauty of the area and imagine the stories that the Tol-Maen might have told if it could speak. This image, created in 1869 by an unknown artist for Illustrated London News, serves as a poignant reminder of the Tol-Maen and the history it held within its ancient form.
