The Terra Nova, 1903

Photograph of the three-masted barque, Terra Nova, taken in 1903 when she was setting out for the Antarctic to try to find and help the Discovery expedition. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the three-masted barque, Terra Nova, as she set sail for Antarctica in 1903, with the determination of its crew and passengers etched on every line and plank. Launched in Dundee, Scotland, in 1884 by Alexander Stephan & Sons Ltd, the Terra Nova began her seafaring life in the whaling and sealing fleet. Her exceptional seaworthiness and resilience soon caught the attention of expeditions seeking reliable relief ships. In 1894-1897, the Terra Nova served as a relief ship for the Jackson-Harmsworth Arctic Expedition. Later, between 1910 and 1913, she became the main vessel of the British National Antarctic Expedition, led by the indomitable Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The Terra Nova's crucial role in this historic journey was to transport supplies and personnel to the ice-bound Discovery, which was trapped in the pack ice. As the Terra Nova sailed away from the shores of Dundee in 1903, she carried the hopes and dreams of the scientific community and the British public. The anticipation of discovery and the spirit of adventure were palpable as the crew prepared for the challenges of the treacherous Antarctic waters. This image, taken from the ILN (Illustrated London News), stands as a testament to the Terra Nova's rich history and her indispensable role in the exploration of the unknown. The Terra Nova, a proud and sturdy barque, had proven herself in the harsh conditions of the whaling and sealing fleet. Her masts, standing tall and strong, bore witness to her enduring legacy. This photograph, with its evocative image of the Terra Nova setting sail for Antarctica, is a poignant reminder of the human spirit's unquenchable thirst for knowledge and exploration.
