The Tabard or Talbot Inn DD97_00055

Tabard Inn, Talbot Yard, Southwark, London. A view of the courtyard with a wagon in the foreground and a group of people. The Tabard was an established inn during the Middle Ages and features in Chaucers The Canterbury Tales, written in the late 14th century. The pilgims met here before setting out on their journey to the Cathedral. The inn burnt down in 1676 and it is the rebuilt one (which may be based on the original building) that is pictured here. As a coaching inn it suffered from the coming of the railways. Renamed the Talbot Inn, the buildings around the courtyard were used as storerooms in the 19th century, but it was sold in 1873 and demolished shortly afterwards. Photographed by York & Son 1870-73

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, captured by the renowned Victorian photography studio York & Son between 1870 and 1873, presents a scene of the Talbot Inn, formerly known as The Tabard, nestled in the heart of Southwark, London. The Tabard Inn, a storied establishment dating back to the Middle Ages, holds a significant place in English literature as the starting point for Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. In this image, we witness the inn's courtyard, where a horse-drawn wagon occupies the foreground, and a lively group of people gather, likely preparing for their own pilgrimage or simply enjoying a moment of camaraderie. The original Tabard Inn, an integral coaching inn during the medieval period, suffered the fate of many such establishments with the advent of the railways. By the 19th century, the buildings surrounding the courtyard were repurposed as storerooms. However, the Talbot Inn, as it came to be known, was sold in 1873 and subsequently demolished shortly thereafter. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the rich history of this once-famous inn. The image invites us to imagine the bustling activity that once filled the courtyard, and to ponder the stories and experiences of the people who passed through its doors during the inn's storied past.
