"This striking portrait captures The Right Hon. Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead, in the early days of his distinguished career in British politics. The photograph was taken in December 1914, just a few months after he was assigned as the head of the newly established Press Bureau by the British Government. At the time, the outbreak of war in Europe had created a pressing need for the control and supply of accurate and timely official war information to the public. In response, the Government decided to establish the Press Bureau in August 1914 to manage the dissemination of information to the media and the general public. Smith, who had previously served as the Attorney General and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, was an ideal choice for the role due to his eloquence, intelligence, and experience in public affairs. Smith's tenure as the head of the Press Bureau was marked by his commitment to transparency and his efforts to ensure that the British public received reliable and unbiased information about the war.
