1591 Anglo Azores Defeated Flores

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Defeat of Sir Richard Grenville's Revenge at the Battle of Flores, Azores, 1591: A Moment of Historical Turning Point This evocative image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Flores, a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Spanish War of the late 16th century. In August 1591, Sir Richard Grenville, an English privateer and naval commander, sailed his formidable ship, the Revenge, into the waters off the Azores, intent on raiding Spanish treasure galleons. However, the Spanish, led by Don Juan de Quintana, were prepared and ready for battle. The ensuing engagement was fierce and prolonged, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Eventually, the Revenge, though initially holding her own, began to falter. With the prospect of capture looming, Sir Richard Grenville made the fateful decision to scuttle his beloved ship rather than see it fall into Spanish hands. In this print from Mary Evans Picture Library, we see the Revenge, her once-proud sails now tattered and torn, listing heavily in the water as her crew, under Grenville's command, abandon ship. The Spanish, victorious but wary of the danger of a sinking vessel, stand off at a distance, their ships forming a protective barrier around the scene. This event marked a significant turning point in the Anglo-Spanish War, with the Spanish gaining a crucial victory and the English suffering a major setback. The defeat of the Revenge served as a reminder of the power and determination of the Spanish Armada, and the ongoing struggle for maritime supremacy between these two great European powers.
