Eire becomes a republic on the anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916: the General Post Office in O Connell Street, focal point of the rebellion, here the saluting-base for the military parade in Dublin on Easter Monday. This historic photograph captures the momentous occasion of the proclamation of the Republic of Ireland on Easter Monday, April 18th, 1949. The General Post Office in O'Connell Street, a focal point of the 1916 Easter Rising, served as the saluting base for the military parade in Dublin. The President of Ireland, T. O'Kelly, and the Premier, John A. Costello, attended the ceremonies marking the anniversary of the rebellion that led to Ireland's independence. With the passage of the Republic of Ireland Act, Eire officially became a republic at midnight on Easter Sunday, April 17th, 1949.
