The Reform Club, 1969
The smoking room of the Reform Club on Pall Mall, London in 1969. The Reform Club was founded in 1836, in Pall Mall, in the centre of what is often called Londons Clubland. The founders commissioned a leading architect of the day, Charles Barry, to build an imposing and palatial clubhouse. It is as splendid today as when it opened in 1841. Membership was restricted to those who pledged support for the Great Reform Act of 1832, and the many MPs and Whig peers among the early members developed the Club as the political headquarters of the Liberal Party, though the club today has no political affiliation. Date: 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1969, offers a glimpse into the tranquil and exclusive atmosphere of the Reform Club's smoking room on Pall Mall, London. Founded in 1836, the Reform Club is a historic and palatial establishment, designed by the renowned architect Charles Barry, that has stood proudly in the heart of London's Clubland ever since. The club's name is deeply rooted in history, as it was established to support the Great Reform Act of 1832, and its early members, many of whom were MPs and Whig peers, transformed it into the political headquarters of the Liberal Party. The Reform Club's smoking room, as depicted in this image, is a testament to the refined and peaceful ambiance that has drawn gentlemen to this esteemed institution for over a century and a half. The room is adorned with rich wood paneling, plush armchairs, and an impressive collection of books and newspapers, providing the perfect setting for members to unwind and engage in stimulating conversations. The gentlemen in the photograph can be seen engrossed in their reading material, the soft glow of their cigars casting a warm and inviting light over the room. The Reform Club's commitment to preserving its historic charm and providing a peaceful retreat from the bustling city has made it a cherished institution among London's elite. Though it no longer holds any political affiliation, the club remains a beacon of tradition and exclusivity, offering its members a sanctuary where they can relax, read, and engage in thoughtful discourse, much as their predecessors did over a century ago.
