EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the defiant stance of Tsar Alexander II of Russia (1818-1881) as he resists the growing demands for constitutional rule in the late 19th century. In the background, various figures representing different factions of Russian society, including the nobility, the intelligentsia, and the peasantry, clamor for reform. However, the Tsar, depicted as a stubborn and obstinate figure, remains unmoved, unwilling to yield to their demands. Little did Tsar Alexander know that his refusal to give in to the calls for constitutional rule would have dire consequences. In 1881, a nihilist bomb exploded during his procession through St. Petersburg, resulting in his death and the ascension of his son, Tsar Alexander III, to the throne. This tragic event would come to be known as the "Tsar Liberator's Ungrateful Sons" and would mark a turning point in Russian history. This historical print, created in 1879, predates the bombing and serves as a poignant reminder of the political tensions that existed in Russia during Tsar Alexander II's reign. The cartoon-like style of the illustration adds a sense of whimsy and satire to the serious subject matter, making it a fascinating and thought-provoking addition to any history collection. The print also serves as a reminder of the complex and often contentious relationship between the Russian people and their monarchs, as well as the role of revolutionary movements in shaping the course of history. Overall, this print is a valuable historical artifact that offers insights into the political climate of late 19th century Russia and the events that would ultimately lead to the downfall of Tsar Alexander II.
