EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the legendary moment when the great hero Herakles, also known as Hercules, confronts the formidable Nemean Lion. One of the twelve labors assigned to Herakles by King Eurystheus, the slaying of the Nemean Lion was no ordinary task. This lion, said to have been born from the tear of the Moon Goddess, was virtually invulnerable, with an impenetrable hide that could not be pierced by any weapon. Herakles, undeterred by this challenge, approached the lion with cunning and courage. He lured the beast into a thicket, where he managed to strangle it with his bare hands. The Nemean Lion's defeat marked a significant milestone in Herakles' journey to complete his twelve labors, which were given to him as a form of penance for killing his wife and children in a fit of madness. The classical myth of Herakles and the Nemean Lion has been passed down through generations, inspiring awe and admiration for the hero's strength, determination, and resourcefulness. This print, from Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the raw power and intensity of the encounter between Herakles and the mythical lion, transporting us back to the ancient world of Greek mythology.
