EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts The Look-Out, or Crows Nest, atop the mainmast of one of the ships, HMS Alert or HMS Discovery, in the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876. Led by Captain George Nares, this expedition was sent by the British Admiralty with the ambitious goal of reaching the North Pole via Smith Sound. Although the attempt was ultimately unsuccessful, significant achievements were made during this journey. A new furthest North record was set, and the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island were extensively charted. The scientific data gathered during this expedition was of great historical importance, contributing significantly to our understanding of the Arctic region. The Look-Out, located at the highest point of the ship's mast, provided a vantage point for observing the surrounding environment and navigating through the treacherous Arctic waters. This engraving is a testament to the determination and exploration spirit of the British Arctic Expedition, which took place between the years 1875 and 1876. The ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery, played a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge and charting new territories in the Arctic, making this an important moment in maritime and polar exploration history.
