EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the revered figure of the late Reverend George L. Pilkington (1865-1898), a dedicated missionary of the English Church Missionary Society (CMS) in Uganda, Africa. The image, taken towards the end of the 19th century, portrays Pilkington in his prime, standing confidently against the backdrop of the African savannah. Born in England, Pilkington was called to the ministry in his late twenties and, driven by a deep sense of religious duty and a desire to spread the gospel to the farthest reaches of the world, joined the CMS and was assigned to Uganda. He spent the better part of a decade in Africa, working tirelessly to establish schools, hospitals, and churches, and to bring the message of Christianity to the indigenous people. Despite the challenges and hardships that came with living and working in a foreign land, Pilkington remained steadfast in his mission. He faced numerous obstacles, including language barriers, cultural differences, and the hostility of some local leaders. But he persevered, earning the respect and admiration of many in the community through his kindness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his faith. Tragically, Pilkington's life was cut short when he was killed in a skirmish between European explorers and local tribesmen. His death was a great loss to the CMS and to the people of Uganda, who mourned the passing of a man who had dedicated his life to bringing them the light of the gospel. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Pilkington and other missionaries like him, who left their homes and families to bring the message of Christianity to the ends of the earth. It is a testament to the power of faith and the indomitable human spirit, and a reminder of the rich and complex history of the English Church Missionary Society in Africa.
