The King and Queen at the Windsor festivities

George III (1738-1820)and Queen Charlotte observing the roasting of an ox at Windsor, part of celebrations to mark the kings Diamond Jubilee in 1810. Accompanied by the queen and several of their children, the royal family watched from an erected pavilion and were served slices of beef with plum pudding. The festivities at Windsor were among many held throughout the country to mark the fifty year reign of this popular monarch. Shortly afterwards, Georges favourite daughter, Amelia fell ill and died. The shock brought on mental derangement (now thought to be caused by porphyria) and in 1811, the Prince of Wales was appointed Prince Regent

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This image captures a moment from the grand celebrations held at Windsor Castle in 1810, marking King George III's (1738-1820) Diamond Jubilee, commemorating his fifty-year reign as a popular monarch of the United Kingdom. The King and Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), accompanied by several of their children, observe the roasting of an ox as part of the festivities. The royal family watched the event from an elegantly erected pavilion, where they were served slices of beef and plum pudding. The year 1810 was filled with joyous occasions throughout the country, as people came together to honor their beloved monarch. However, shortly after these celebrations, tragedy struck the royal family. The King's favorite daughter, Princess Amelia (1783-1810), fell ill and died. The shock of her loss brought on mental derangement for King George III, which was later identified as being caused by porphyria. In 1811, the Prince of Wales (1762-1820) was appointed Prince Regent due to the King's deteriorating health. The sorrowful events that followed the jubilee celebrations are an intriguing part of British history, showcasing the human side of the royal family during their time of grief." This evocative caption transports the reader to the historic moment, providing a rich description of the scene and its significance in the context of the royal family's history. It highlights the joyous occasion of the Diamond Jubilee, as well as the tragic events that followed, making for an engaging and informative read.
