The gypsies are leaving their hundred year old settlement on Hurtwood Hill in Surrey
The gypsies are leaving their hundred year old settlement on Hurtwood Hill in Surrey. They lived in huts, caravans and benders ( huts with branches bent over and covered with sacks ) - but now they are forsaking their picturesque homes and many of them are moving into corrugated iron bungalows at West Walton provided by the Surrey Council as alternative accomodation.
In their new homes, the gypsies will discard their Romany customs and follow the ways of civilisation.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the departure of the gypsies from their century-old settlement on Hurtwood Hill in Surrey. For years, these resilient individuals have called huts, caravans, and benders (sacks-covered huts made with bent branches) their picturesque homes. However, change is now upon them as they embrace alternative accommodation provided by the Surrey Council - corrugated iron bungalows at West Walton. In this poignant image, a gypsy family can be seen carrying logs to make bass brooms outside their humble bender at the Hurtwood Hill encampment. The scene exudes both nostalgia and anticipation for what lies ahead. As they bid farewell to their Romany customs, these families are embarking on a new chapter where they will adopt the ways of civilization. The photograph transports us back to January 11th, 1934 - an era defined by its unique charm and resilience between two world wars. It offers a glimpse into social history while showcasing the spirit of travel and makeshift living that characterized this community. Through this lens capturing children playing amidst woods filled with smoke from crackling fires, boys diligently working alongside women balancing logs on paths leading away from familiar territory; we witness not just a physical relocation but also an emotional journey towards progress. This remarkable piece of European photography serves as a testament to human adaptability and reminds us of our ever-evolving society's ability to transform lives while preserving memories for generations to come.
