The General Strike - canteens in Hyde Park

Lady Betty Butler (left) and Miss Collett Doughty armed with large frying pans; part of an organised response to the General Strike where canteens were set up in Hyde Park, London and staffed by well-known society ladies, in order to feed the food supply transport workers. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days. Date: May 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the spirit of solidarity and determination during the General Strike of May 1926 in Hyde Park, London. The image features Lady Betty Butler (left) and Miss Collett Doughty, two prominent society ladies, armed with large frying pans. In response to the strike called by the Trades Union Congress in support of coal miners facing threatened wage cuts, these women and others set up canteens in the park to feed the food supply transport workers. The strike, which only involved certain key industrial sectors such as docks, electricity, gas, and railways, was met with well-organized government emergency measures and lacked real public support. Despite the challenges, these women demonstrated their commitment to the cause by staffing the canteens and providing sustenance to the strikers. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the collective action taken during a pivotal moment in labor history."
