EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the historic General Locomotive, a symbol of the dramatic events that unfolded during the American Civil War. The General, a powerful and iconic piece of transportation technology, was famously captured by the Andrews Raiders on April 12, 1862, in a daring and pivotal moment in the conflict's history. The raiders, a small group of Union soldiers, had set out on a mission to seize the locomotive and disrupt Confederate supply lines. They succeeded in their objective, but their victory was short-lived. The Confederates, alerted to the theft, launched a relentless pursuit, giving rise to one of the most dramatic chases in railroad history. The chase covered an astonishing 90 miles, with the General's engineers and conductors valiantly trying to evade their pursuers. The Confederates, determined to recapture their prized locomotive, eventually caught up with it near Big Shanty, Georgia. In the ensuing battle, the Union forces were defeated, and the General was once again under Confederate control. Now, the General stands proudly at the Chattanooga Depot in Tennessee, a testament to the ingenuity, courage, and determination of the men who lived through this extraordinary episode in American history. The locomotive's capture and recapture serve as a reminder of the strategic importance of transportation during wartime and the lengths to which both sides went to secure their advantage on the battlefield.
