EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic and picturesque Ewelme Almshouses in Ewelme, Oxfordshire. Established in 1437 by William de la Pole, 1st Duke and 4th Earl of Suffolk, these almshouses were founded alongside a Grammar School, making it one of the oldest educational institutions still in use as a state school in the United Kingdom. The almshouses, officially known as "The Two Chaplains and Thirteen Poor Men of Ewelme in the County of Oxford," were designed to provide shelter and support for thirteen poor men, although the number has been reduced to eight in modern times. The building is still run as a charity by the Ewelme Trust. The image reveals the cloistered almshouses, which are enclosed by a garden and feature a tranquil courtyard. The architectural design is a testament to the rich history of the region, with its intricate details and Gothic arches. The presence of the chaplains' quarters adds to the spiritual significance of the site. The almshouses have stood the test of time, and their enduring presence serves as a reminder of the generosity and compassion of those who founded them over six centuries ago. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to reflect on the history and traditions that have shaped the community of Ewelme.
