EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures the historic beauty and tranquility of The Ewelme Almshouses in Oxfordshire, England. Founded in 1437 by William de la Pole, 1st Duke and 4th Earl of Suffolk, these almshouses and the attached Grammar School are a testament to the rich history of this charming village. Officially known as "The Two Chaplains and Thirteen Poor Men of Ewelme in the County of Oxford," the almshouses were established to provide shelter and support for thirteen poor men, with the number now reduced to eight. The building is still run as a charity by the Ewelme Trust, maintaining its original purpose. The Ewelme Almshouses are renowned for their unique cloistered design, with each almsman having his own cell, complete with a private garden. The building features a stunning tower, which houses the church where the almsmen once attended services. The church, with its intricate stonework and stained glass windows, adds to the overall charm of the complex. The Grammar School, which is said to be the oldest school building still in use as a state school in the United Kingdom, is also a significant part of the Ewelme estate. The school, which was founded alongside the almshouses, has played a pivotal role in the education of generations of local children. The Ewelme Almshouses and Grammar School are not only historical landmarks but also an integral part of the local community. The village of Ewelme, with its picturesque parish church and quaint houses, is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in English history and architecture.
