EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the determined and focused gaze of Commander Max K. Horton, a hero of the First World War and the commander of the submarine E9, responsible for the historic sinking of three German warships in August 14, 1915. The Pommern, Hela, and S.116 were major naval vessels in the German fleet, and their destruction dealt a significant blow to Germany's naval power. Commander Horton, born on July 21, 1882, was a decorated officer in the Royal Navy, having joined in 1900. His daring exploits during the war earned him the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC). The photograph, taken by an ILN (Illustrated London News) photographer, captures Horton in his element, standing proudly on the deck of his submarine, with the sea and sky as his backdrop. The E9, a British E-class submarine, was a formidable weapon in the war at sea. With its advanced torpedo technology and stealth capabilities, it was able to outmaneuver and outsmart the larger German warships. Commander Horton's skill and courage were instrumental in the E9's successes. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and determination of the submarine service during the First World War. It is a reminder of the pivotal role that submarines played in the naval warfare of the time and the impact that individual commanders could have on the outcome of the conflict. The sinking of the Pommern, Hela, and S.116 was a turning point in the war at sea and a significant victory for the Allied forces.
